National Nurses Week kicked off last Friday & ends TODAY (Thursday.) This afternoon at 4:35 on the Puffman Show, my special guest will be Theresa Brown, RN. Theresa's the author of one of the most thought provoking books I've ever read! Her book is "The Shift: One Nurse, Twelve Hours, Four Patients' Lives," & it's a page turner for sure. Theresa's tome is a vivid 1st hand account of what nurses do day in & day out & opens our eyes to the intense, frustrating, & often joyful profession that is really the heart & soul of ANY hospital. By sharing her ups & downs during just 1 shift on the floor of the cancer ward, Theresa Brown, an English professor turned nurse, reveals how nurses advocate for their patients, explain treatment to families, make dozens of medical decisions, chart their work, interact with doctors & hospital staff, &  keep their emotions in check-all in the span of 12 hours when the lives of their patients are in their hands. I agree with the "Wall Street Journal" when they write, "The Shift is one nurse's story, but it contains elements of every nurse's experience." Check out the book from Algonquin Books at: www.alonquin.com, & then listen in this afternoon. It's been a fantastic read for me...I've almost come to the end but I'm afraid to finish the book because I'm worried that 1 or more of these 4 patients might die at the end. But, like life itself, there's not always a happy ending. Now that I've brightened up your day...
