Jhonny Peralta homered twice, and the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees, 8-1, at Comerica Park on Thursday to sweep the American League Championship Series and advance to the World Series for the first time since 2006.

American League Triple Crown-winner Miguel Cabrera and former Yankee Austin Jackson added home runs for Detroit, and starting pitcher Max Scherzer struck out 10 Yankees, alloweing just two hits in 5-2/3 innings pitched. Series MVP Delmon Young went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Young hit .353 and drove in six runs in the series. The Tigers shelled New York starter C.C. Sabathia for 11 hits and 6 runs in 3-2/3 innings.

Nick Swisher’s sixth-inning RBI double driving in Eduardo Nunez accounted for all of the Yankees’ offense for the game. New York scored just six runs in the four games of the best-of-seven series.

Detroit awaits the winner of the National League Championship Series between the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants. The defending world champion Cardinals lead the best-of-seven series two games to one heading into Thursday night’s Game 4.

The World Series is scheduled to start Wednesday night at the home park of the National League champion
