I'll be going up to the Marias Heritage Center here in Shelby reading more "Montana History" this evening (Tuesday) at 6. Last week, we started the book, "Penny Post Cards and Prairie Flowers". It is a relatively good read & all, but I suspect that this might be a better book to read on an individual basis as opposed to reading aloud to a group of folks. As the title suggests, the author, Philip J. Burgess, has gathered a ton of penny post cards written between his mother, his great-aunt, & assorted relatives a million years ago. It's a good story & all but reading all these penny post cards isn't all that interesting...at least to me. I mean, I don't even know these people Here's a example: "Do you see Paddy. I wish the colt was allong. You must come home soon". That's it, that's all, that's it from here now. These folks couldn't even spell! I just might send "Penny Post Cards and Prairie Flowers" to the dead letters file & begin reading another book...I've got a good one picked out. It's "Girl from the Gulches; The Story of Mary Ronan", the detailed memoir recalling the young girl's journey across the Great Plains, her childhood on the Colorado & Montana mining frontier, her ascent to young womanhood on a farm in southern California, her experiences as a student in a Los Angles convent school, her return to Montana as a bride, & her life on the Flathead Indian Reservation as wife of the Indian agent. We'll talk about it tonight at "Montana History" & I'll let you know where we're going on a future Puffman Blog. In the meantime, PLEASE don't send me any penny post cards!
