I've come across THE book of all books for railroad buffs & my last name, of course, rhymes with "buff." For all of the steam & diesel locomotives you can't see in person, or the ones you want to remember in all of their larger-than-life glory, this read is the ultimate! It's "The Art of the Locomotive" by Ken Boyd. Mr. Boyd, a fine-art & experimental photographer for more than 35 years & a train & railroading enthusiast all his life, has put together one beautiful outstanding coffee table presentation. I often like to say that nothing beats experience & this tome is proof! "The Art of the Locomotive" features 150 large-format plates depicting locomotives ranging from the diminutive steam engines of the middle 19th century to the steam & diesel behemoths that followed. Each plate is accompanied by a detailed caption describing the locomotive's history & technology. The machines included represent railroads from all over the United States & Canada, from the Great Lakes region to the Gulf of Mexico, from the east Coast to the West Coast. The photographs included in the book are the result of Boyd's many years of experience. The man has been "shooting" trains since the 1970's & since then he has photographed hundreds of locomotives all over the country & Canada, not to mention some in Europe. It's classic locomotives in simply stunning & breathtakingly rich photography, lush with details. I feel that most of us up here on the Hi-Line AND the MAIN line of the railroad share a deep love & appreciation of trains. Check out "The Art Of The Locomotive" from Ken Boyd & Voyageur Press at: www.voyageurpress.com. I'm hoping to invite Mr. Boyd as a special guest some afternoon on the Puffman Show in the coming year. Happy New Year & ALL ABOARD. You'll love this one!~
