Bob Dylan Testifies for Chrysler in Super Bowl Ad

We all knew that Bob Dylan‘s music would appear in two Super Bowl commercials this year, but what we didn’t know was how strongly — and clearly — he would verbally testify on behalf of the American auto industry in one of them.

In addition to licensing his song ‘I Want You’ for an amusing yogurt advertisement, a well-dressed, pool-playing Dylan was the star of an epic two-minute long Chrysler commercial. In providing music for (and in this unique case, actually appearing in) a television spot supporting our nation’s beleaguered auto industry, Dylan joins a lineage of music stars that includes Bob Seger, John Mellencamp and Eminem, whose song ‘Lose Yourself’ appeared in Chrysler’s 2011 ads.

As his 2000 song ‘Things Have Changed’ plays in the background over images of a young Dylan, James Dean, Marilyn Monroe and other American icons, the singer himself talks about Detroit’s pioneering role in American manufacturing, as well as the can-do spirit of our country.

“When it’s made here, it’s made with the one thing you can’t import from anywhere else — American pride.” says Dylan. “So let Germany brew your beer, let Switzerland make your watch, let Asia assemble your phone. We will build your car.”

Of course, Dylan’s appearance in two Super Bowl commercials also gave some popular comedians a reason to take a couple of shots at him on Twitter:
