New UM Study Quantifies Morel Mushroom Abundance After Wildfire

MISSOULA – University of Montana forest ecology Professor Andrew Larson recently published research estimating the abundance of morel mushrooms after a wildfire in California’s Sierra Nevada.
“So many people love to harvest and eat morel mushrooms,” Larson said, “but there is very little research that measures the abundance of morels after a forest has burned. We wanted to give forest managers concrete data on morel abundance.”

UM Grad Student Builds New Type of Molecule

            MISSOULA – A chemistry doctoral student at the University of Montana recently helped develop a new type of molecule, and his work was the cover story for a top scientific journal.
            Casey Massena of Santa Cruz, California, works in the UM lab of Assistant Professor Orion Berryman. Massena’s work was published in Angewandte Chemie International Edition, which has a global readership.

Public comment sought for ice fishing contests proposed for winter 2016-2017
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks is seeking public comment on ice fishing contests proposed for the 2016-2017 winter season. Participants must comply with state fishing regulations, including daily and possession limits.

Applications for ice fishing contests may be approved, approved with conditions, or denied by the FWP Fisheries Division in Helena. Conditions placed on contests may help to minimize fish mortality, regulate harvest, reduce user conflicts and/or require additional access site maintenance when needed.

Information on the proposed fishing contests can be found on the FWP Fishing Contest webpage, http://fwp.mt.gov/fishing/whereToFish/contests/, or by calling 406-444-2449. All comments must be received on or before Aug. 26.

Comments may be mailed to FWP Fisheries Division, Attn: Fishing Contests, P.O. Box 200701, Helena, MT 59620-0701, or emailed to fwpfsh@mt.gov.

Cut Bank Family has a Harrowing Trip to NHSFR

The Guardipee family of Cut Bank packed up the truck and headed for Gillette, Wyoming, so Caleb could compete in the National High School Finals Rodeo. This trip would turn out to be like no other.

Their nearly-new Chevy truck was showing signs of some problem about forty miles north of Sheridan. Having trouble climbing the hill caught the attention of Donny Guardipee and when they started down the other side, he realized they had no brakes. Thankfully, he was able to get the vehicle stopped using the trailer brakes.
