Classically trained opera singer Chris Mann certainly has more than enough vocal chops to sing Simon & Garfunkel‘s ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water,’ but does he have enough restraint? And can he manage to capture the audience’s attention while performing the classic cut?

That was the challenge Mann faced Monday night as ‘The Voice’ entered its first week of Live Shows — and he was up to the challenge. In fact, Mann and coach Christina Aguilera purposefully picked the tune in attempt to prove to America that there’s more to him than his golden pipes, and he proved just that, finding the perfect middle ground between his fierce, opera-enhanced Big Voice and the hush-hush, whispered folksy tenderlings of the original. Mann managed to connect with his audience and sang beautifully.

“The song has been done so many times but what I loved about it was you truly owned it,” Aguilera told her contestant, clearly bowled over. “Thank you for making me a proud coach.” But did he win over America? Tune in Tuesday night (April 3) to catch the results from the first week of Live Shows and see if Mann has trouble making it to next week.
