Communities faced with flooding emergencies

HAVRE, Mont. (AP) — Communities in northern Montana are considering emergency declarations amid flooding from unrelenting rainfall.

Some areas have seen more rain in the past two weeks than in a normal year. Several communities are still recovering from flooding disasters in 2010 and 2011.

The Chippewa Cree Tribe and Hill County were among the local governments considering disaster declarations Tuesday.

The tribe has closed several roads and issued a boil water notice for homes with wells.

More than a foot of rain has fallen in the past two weeks in the Bears Paw Mountains south of Havre. The city averages just 11.6 inches of rain a year.

To the south, the five-week rain total for the Big Snowy Mountains is at least 19.4 inches, nearly 1 ½ inches more than Lewistown’s annual rainfall
