That's what Tall Todd, the custom harvester guy, says. Our favorite custom cutter is still stuck southeast of Denver. Rain & high humidity have been tightening their jaws, but the men are beginning to see the light at the end of the south 40. They have cut some pretty decent white wheat; good protein & running 55 bushels PLUS! The elevator pays on protein, & the higher protein is binned separate. They are now switching to stripper (& I mean that in a nice way) headers & only have 3 of them, so 1 machine is being cleaned off & getting ready to move up here to north central Montana, with the rest of the machines to follow shortly. The stripper header takes only the standing grain; stripping it from the head, thus the name "stripper header." When I 1st heard this term, I figured it pertained to the star dancing attraction at a gentlemen's club! The combines can travel at a higher threshing speed, since the machines take in very little straw. Tall Todd reports that Texas has had over 36 inches of rain since May 1st, & there are still combines harvbesting grain in the Amarillo area. He also shared that a custom harvester friend that is harvesting over in Forsyth, lost a combine header to fire. No doubt about it...an EXPENSIVE loss to the owner! We'll have more details once Todd arrives in Conrad as the harvest begins in our Golden Triangle!
