Do MLB Managers Get Fired Too Quickly? — Sports Survey of the Day

Major League Baseball’s regular season is in the books. We move on to the postseason now, but first a quick look back.

It’s safe to say that many people thought that Bobby Valentine’s employment as manager of the Red Sox would be terminated at some point soon. Management wasted no time in doing so, firing him the day after the regular season ended.

Managers have tough jobs. They need to win the respect of their players, handle the media (which is especially tough in a town like Boston) and make tons of in-game decisions every night. On top of that, they’re not the ones actually doing the playing either; certainly you can’t blame the manager if a team can’t seem to get a clutch hit.

Do owners give them enough time to do what they were hired to do? Do they cut them loose too soon—or, in some cases, not soon enough?
