Do You Know How Many Facial Expressions One Person Can Make? [VIDEOS]

How you feel about this story may be written all over your face.

Researchers at Ohio State University have found that humans can make 21 different facial expressions, a huge jump from the six emotions that were thought to be conveyed, including happy, sad, fearful, angry, disgusted and surprised.

New emotions include sadly angry, happily surprised, fearfully angry, angrily surprised and happily disgusted.

One of the researchers involved in the study said this work covers a lot of new ground:

We’ve gone beyond facial expressions for simple emotions like happy or sad. We found a strong consistency in how people move their facial muscles to express 21 categories of emotions.”

Scientists came up with the new facial expressions by snapping pictures of 230 volunteers after telling them things such as “You just got some great unexpected news” or “You smell a bad odor.”
