Sunday marked the moment when Fauja Singh from east London received a Guinness Book of World Records title for being the oldest man alive to complete a full-distance marathon.

At 100 years old, Singh finished the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in a time of eight hours, 22 minutes and 16 seconds.

“He’s absolutely overjoyed, he’s achieved his lifelong wish,” said Singh’s coach and translator Harmander Singh. “Earlier, just before we came around the (final) corner, he said, ‘Achieving this will be like getting married again.’”

Singh began running seriously 11 years ago in order to cope with the deaths of his wife and son. Now, his training regime consists of running 10 miles every day.

“The secret to a long and healthy life is to be stress-free,” he said. “Be grateful for everything you have, stay away from people who are negative, stay smiling and keep running.”

And for improving your stamina, Singh recommends ginger curry, tea and “being happy.”
