We are almost to the conclusion of Helena author Lenore McKelvey Puhek's "Forever Friends" at our Tuesday evening "Montana History" reading at the Marias Heritage Center and I truly hate to see this journey of two families from Civil War Virginia to Montana Territory draw to a close. There's a couple of chapters left and I have the feeling that there are going to be a couple of real surprises. This cast of characters, Jeremiah, Josie, Amelia, Beulah, and the every lovable zany Mutchniks have all gone up the creek and by the creek, I mean up the river from St. Louis, Missouri to Fort Benton, Montana. They have "set up shop" in Helena and how this is going to work out is beyond me. I mean, look at the situation: Amelia thought Jeremiah was dead, she's still wearing his locket, her husband IS dead, Jeremiah has married Josie after he found out that she is a woman and not a man, Josie has given birth to their baby, Beulah is reading books, the war is over and Amelia has spotted Jeremiah. There's one person TOO many in this threesome and I'm not sure even the clever Mutchniks can figure out a solution short of dumping either Amelia or Josie off the boat and it's too late for that. We'll finish the book this coming Tuesday evening and then I don't know what we are going to do. Me? I'm waiting for Lenore to write the sequel and if it's anywhere near as good as this read, it's going to be another page turner. Stay tuned
