I'm giving away the FIRST book in Anthony Bourdain's line of books this afternoon (Wednesday) at 4:30 on "Puffman Musical Trivia"! It's a beautiful coffee table presentation put together by Texas Monthly's Barbecue Editor, Daniel Vaughn, with really neat photographs by Nicholas McWhirter. The book is "The Prophets of Smoked Meat". "Publishers Weekly blasts that writer "Vaughn offers detailed, informed critiques of eateries...Though an admitted Yankee from Ohio, his expertise is unassailable. Vaughn's got over 500 BBQ joints under his belt & he's a fair judge of the good, the bad, & the mediocre when it comes to smoked meat". I know a lot of people who LOOK like they have 500 BBQ joints under their belt, but none of them have written a book like this! Daniel "BBQ Snob" Vaughn is an expert on Texas barbecue with an extensive history of palate-shaping journeys across the Lone Star state & this tome just went on sale nationwide yesterday! The 1st caller in at 434 5241 with the correct answer to my musical trivia question this afternoon wins "The Prophets of Smoked Meat", the book that encompasses the entire landscape of Texas barbecue, from the holy trinity (brisket, ribs & sausage) to sides such as coleslaw, onion rings & pinto beans, as well as desserts including banana pudding & buttermilk pie. This book, & it's a big one, captures the grandeur of the Texas landscape, the faces of the people who call it home, & the scrumptious, messy, meatiness of barbecue.
