It’s National Donut Day!

It's National Donut Day! No, this fresh-baked holiday is not sponsored by Dunkin' Donuts or Tim Horton's or even Kryspy Kreme. National Donut Day began in 1938 in Chicago. The local Salvation Army needed to raise funds and also wanted to honor the Salvation Army "Lassies" who ran canteens for servicemen in France during World War I. They found that donuts were a quick and easy treat to make and the boys just couldn't get enough.

Some say this is why American infantrymen were called "doughboys", but the term had been in use for at least a century before that.
