The Cars’ ‘Just What I Needed’ Gets the Bluegrass Treatment from the Punch Brothers

If there is one thing that up and coming bluegrass band Punch Brothers can take comfort in should their pursuit of a career writing original music fall flat, it is that they can pull off one hell of a great cover song, as they did recently with their rendition of ‘Just What I Needed’ by the Cars.

The Punch Brothers were formed by Chris Thile in 2007 when his previous band Nickel Creek disbanded. A virtuoso on the mandolin, Thile and the Punch Brothers issued their debut album ‘Punch’ in 2008, following that up with ‘Antifogmatic’ in 2010. The group’s newest effort, ‘Who’s Feeling Young Now,’ was released this past February and was produced by Jacquire King who has also helmed the last two Kings of Leon records.

The group has already gained much notoriety for their cover of experimental art-rockers Radiohead’s track ‘Kid A.’ What is perhaps most remarkable about their cover of the Cars’ 1978 hit is not only the group’s musical versatility but also their dedication to their craft, as they deliver a startlingly faithful cover that any Cars fan should appreciate. The fact that no electric instrumentation is used by the Punch Brothers when performing the song makes the feat even more fun to listen to.
