The Library of the Future Is Here, But Missing One Crucial Element

Getting books from the library is about to get a whole lot e-sier.

Texas’ Bexar County will make history by becoming home to the country’s first library that doesn’t have physical books. The BiblioTech, set to open this coming fall, will instead offer e-books and dozens of computer devices for patrons, turning the traditional library into something out of ‘The Jetsons.’

The nearly 5,000-square-foot facility will open with 100 e-readers for people to check out, in addition to 50 more for kids. There will also be 100 computers, laptops and tablets on the premises. In addition, people can bring their own e-readers to the library and load books onto them.

With some 10,000 titles to choose from, no one will be in danger of running out of reading material anytime soon. In fact, it sounds like the only remnant from the library as we now know it is the blue-haired meanie who scolds you for failing to return ‘Robinson Crusoe’ on time.

Nelson Wolff, one of the brains behind the operation, said he came up with the idea after reading Steve Jobs’ biography. He said, “The world is changing and this is the best, most effective way to bring services to our community.” Wolff also said there will be interactive elements for children and plans to feature music and movies.

As far as the blue-haired meanie, well, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens to her.
