The 11th and final song from Bruce Springsteen’s new album, ‘Wrecking Ball,’ has been released for today only, the uplifting ‘We Are Alive.’ You can listen to it below.

Many of Springsteen’s classic albums end with a sense of uneasiness. Closers like ‘My Hometown,’ ‘Wreck on the Highway,’ ‘Reason to Believe’ or the title track to ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town’ leave the listener believing that there’s little they can do to control their fate.

But ‘We Are Alive’ subverts his traditional formula by reminding us that the spirit of activism has carried Americans through the toughest of times. He speaks in the voices of those who have died in the labor, civil rights and immigrant movements to say that they are with those who are fighting for social and economic justice today.

Built around a musical quote from ‘Ring of Fire’ by Johnny Cash (no stranger to speaking out against injustice), ‘We Are Alive’ opens with Springsteen and his acoustic guitar. The song opens up after the first chorus into a hootenanny reminiscent of his 2006 ‘We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions’ excursion into folk music, complete with banjo, fiddle, horns, and foot stomps.

‘Wrecking Ball’ will be released on Tuesday, March 6. Tonight (March 2), Springsteen will be the lone guest on NBC’s ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ in the conclusion of that show’s “Bruce Springsteen Week.”
