After a few days of opening round games, the NCAA Tournament tipped off for real Thursday, including four games in the West Region.

Fourteenth-seeded Harvard shocked New Mexico in the night’s final game, while Arizona routed an overmatched Belmont team to advance to the third round of the 2013 NCAA tournament on Thursday night. Pittsburgh sure didn’t look like a tournament team, as the Panthers couldn’t get their act together in a loss to Wichita State. Number one seed Gonzaga got the scare of its life against Southern.

Wesley Saunders scored 18 points and Laurent Rivard added 17, as 14th-seeded Harvard upset third-seeded New Mexico, 68-62, in a second round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament’s West Regional on Thursday evening in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Crimson, who became the lowest seeded team to win on Thursday, used a suffocating defense and a patient offense to frustrate the Lobos. Center Alex Kirk led New Mexico with 22 points and 12 rebounds. His team shot just 21 percent from the field. Harvard advanced to play Arizona on Saturday.

(6) Arizona 81, (11) Belmont 64

Mark Lyons scored 23 points as Arizona out-muscled Belmont, 81-64, in a second round game of the 2013 NCAA tournament’s West Regional on Thursday evening in Salt Lake City, Utah. The sixth-seeded Wildcats expected a tougher game from the Bruins, but the showdown never materialized as Arizona out-rebounded Belmont, 44-18. Kerron Johnson led the Bruins with 22 points, but it wasn’t nearly enough to topple coach Sean Miller’s talented Wildcats. Arizona advanced to face Harvard on Saturday.

(9) Wichita State 73, (8) Pittsburgh 55

The basket could’ve been as big as a hula hoop and Pittsburgh still might have had trouble scoring. The Panthers struggled to hit shots all day and Wichita State pulled away in the final five minutes to advance in this game where both teams had problems with offensive efficiency. The Panthers shot a woeful 35% from the field and connected on just one of 17 shots from beyond the arc. Wichita State shot only 39% from the field and was paced by Malcolm Armstead’s 22 points, while Cleanthony Early chipped in with 21 points off the bench. Pittsburgh boasted only one player in double digits – Stevens Adams, with 13.

(1) Gonzaga 64, (16) Southern 58

The ‘Zags withstood a valiant effort from the Jaguars, who put up a great fight while trying to become the first #16 seed in history to knock off a #1 seed. This game was in doubt until the end, with Southern tying it at 56 with under 4:00 in play. Indeed, every time it looked as if the Bulldogs would pull away, the Jaguars, which hit 10 3-pointers, found a way to answer. Gonzaga All-American Kelly Olynyk was brilliant, recording 21 points and 10 rebounds to help stave off the historic upset, while Kevin Pangos drilled three 3s. Derick Beltran paced Southern with 21 points.
