New Research Finds That Forgiveness Is Overrated

You’ve likely been told at one point or another that forgiving someone may be difficult, but it’s the right thing to do. It’s the high road, right? Well, maybe not, according to new research.

That’s because even though the act of forgiveness can help take the burden of a less than desirable situation off your shoulders, it can also send “push-over” signals to the other party, which could encourage the person who wronged you to do it again—and fast.

Researchers say they have found that when spouses immediately forgave their partners for being inconsiderate jerks, their partners were six-and-a-half times more likely to do the same inconsiderate, jerky-type stuff the very next day.
