Bad Company singer Paul Rodgers can belt it out with the best of them. And given the opportunity, E Street Band guitarist Nils Lofgren certainly has the chops to play a lengthy, everybody-look-at-me solo if Bruce Springsteen really needed one.

But Rodgers and Lofgren dial things down on their sparkling rendition of Bob Dylan‘s ‘Abandoned Love,’ now available online in advance of the song’s Jan. 24 release as part of a star-studded compilation for Amnesty International. With its strummed acoustic guitars, sporadic electric slide licks and intermittent accordion, ‘Abandoned Love’ has both a country and bluesy feel to it.

Rodgers’ clear, restrained vocals do justice to Dylan’s fairly straightforward lyrics, which include the lines “My head tells me it’s time to make a change / But my heart is telling me I love you but you’re strange.”

Dylan wrote ‘Abandoned Love’ in the mid-1970s but kept it under wraps until ‘Biograph,’ his 1985 boxed set. The Rodgers/Lofgren version of the song will be included on the four-disc collection ‘Chimes of Freedom: The Songs of Bob Dylan Honoring 50 Years of Amnesty International.’
