PC Holds the Reins in Alberta Election

Talk about snatching victory from the jaws of defeat! Alberta’s Progressive Conservative party did just that Monday in provincial elections. The surprise isn’t that the PC won, but that they won big, taking 61 of the 87 ridings (districts) to hold an overwhelming majority in the provincial legislature.

Going into Monday’s voting, the Wild Rose party, made up mostly of disgruntled conservatives, seemed to have a real chance of ending the PC’s 41-year reign in Alberta. In the end, the WRP wound up with only 17 seats, mostly from rural southern ridings, but with the distinction of being the “official opposition” to the Conservatives.

The election was historic for two reasons. PC leader Alison Redford became the first elected female Premiere in province’s history, and Danielle Smith became the first female opposition leader.
