OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Michael Phelps will not be competing for eight gold medals in London. The winner of that many gold medals in China four years ago has dropped one of his races at the London Olympics. Coach Bob Bowman tweeted that Phelps was scratching the 200-meter freestyle, and the decision was confirmed by U.S. head coach Gregg Troy.

Phelps qualified in five individual events for London at the U.S. Olympic trials in Omaha, and he's expected to swim all three relays. But he's decided to focus on the 200 and 400 individual medley, and the 100 and 200 butterfly.

In other news from the U.S. swim trials:

— Dara Torres has come up short in her bid to make it to the Olympics for a sixth time. The 45-year-old Torres finished fourth in the final of the 50-meter freestyle Monday night, her only event at the U.S. swimming trials. Afterward, she said her Olympic career is over.
