When River Phoenix died of a drug overdose 18 years ago, the then 23-year-old was in the middle of shooting the unreleased movie “Dark Blood.” Now ‘Dark Blood’s’ director George Sluzier has re-edited the footage and is looking to bring on Joaquin Phoenix to help complete the project.

According to Sluzier, he is only a few adjustments away from being able to bring the film to theaters. One of these steps is adding a voice over to ‘Dark Blood’ to help with continuity, which he hopes will be Joaquin’s since he has a similar voice to his late brother.

If all goes well, the movie, in which Phoenix’s hermit character comes to the aid of a Hollywood couple whose car breaks down in the desert, will be released in 2012. As of now, the last film Phoenix appeared in was the 1994 western ‘Silent Tongue.’
