Rolling Stones fans may not get the 50th anniversary tour that they were hoping for in 2012, but they can take consolation in knowing that they will get a different – and cheaper – glimpse of the band through a new documentary. The film, which has no official title yet, will have its premiere at the band’s 50th anniversary celebrations in September and will be released through Eagle Rock Entertainment.

The Stones, who are executive producers of the project, have hired Academy Award-nominated director Brett Morgen to piece together a definitive history of the legendary band. In addition to conducting over 50 hours worth of interviews to date, Morgen has full access to the band’s archives, including unreleased music and never-before-seen video footage.

“For anyone who wants to experience the band, this is the film that will defy convention and create a sonic tapestry to transport viewers into the world of the Rolling Stones,” Morgen said. “The film will deliver the original, bold, sexy and dangerous flavor of the iconic rock band.”

The documentary is not the only product the band is producing to honor their 50 years together. Earlier this month it was announced that they will produce a 352-page hardcover book that will be released in Britain on July 12, the anniversary of their first gig.
