The Spotted Eagle Fire made little progress last evening, and as of 9am this morning, is still about 3 miles from Heart Butte.

The fire crossed the western boundary of the Blackfeet reservation Friday afternoon, and strong winds quickly pushed it to the Mitten Lake and Green Lake areas. The Blackfeet Tribal Council issued an emergency declaration, and law enforcement from the tribe, Glacier County and Pondera County went door-to-door, urging people to evacuate.

Blackfeet firefighters, aided by volunteers from Valier and Dupuyer, set up a headquarters in Heart Butte and began working to protect structures in town.

The winds died down after dark, slowing the fire's progress, and this morning it is still about 3 miles from town.

The Blackfeet Tribe and the American Red Cross have established a shelter for evacuees at the ACA Complex, The shelter is located at 80 Heart Butte Road in Browning.
