Teens on Spring Break Save Two People From Burning Car

Luke Vaughn and Cody Decker

When one thinks of teenagers descending on a warm locale for spring break, heroic deeds isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. But instead of making fools of themselves during their trip down to Florida, Cody Decker and Luke Vaughn saved two lives.

The two 17-year-olds from Dewitt, MI, were on vacation in Palm Coast when they saw a car zip by and crash into a tree. They immediately called 911, but realized they were going to have to take a more decisive action when the car burst into flames.

Two of the vehicle’s passenger were trapped in the car, with their legs pinned beneath the dashboard. So the teens risked their own lives and pulled the trapped motorists out before the car was totally engulfed in flames.

Tracy Lopez, 42, and Carlos Adams, 44, were both treated for critical injuries, but survived.

For their heroism, County Sheriff Don Fleming presented Decker and Vaughn with a life-saving award.

“If it wasn’t for them, we’d be attending two funerals right now,” said Tracy’s daughter, Jessica Lopez, who attended the ceremony.

As for Decker and Vaughn, they don’t think of themselves as heroes.

“We’re two ordinary guys just helping people out,” Decker explained.

Ordinary guys, maybe, but quite the unusual spring break. Learn more about the brave duo in this report from ABC News.
