Friday evening (Dec. 16), Ray Davies, former frontman of the Kinks, made a special appearance at Coniston Institute in Cumbria, England, where production was underway for his new musical, ‘Child’s Play.’

Prior to the start of the musical, which the singer wrote, he spoke to the sold-out crowd of 110 people about the “very accomplished” individuals who helped make the dream a reality and put his musical to life.

“It’s a great village, it’s got a great community spirit,” Davies tells BBC News.

The latest performance ‘Child’s Play’ features six students from John Ruskin School playing Kinks songs including ‘Waterloo Sunset’ and ‘All Day And All Of The Night.’ The play was associated with a Grizedale Arts project to revitalize the Coniston Institute.

“It went really well,” Grizedale Arts deputy director Alistair Hudson says of the play. “It was definitely a landmark moment in the village in changing the way people think about the institute.”

Hudson says working with the legendary musician was a “fantastic” experience, saying how Davies encouraged the students involved and helped push them the extra yard, all while allowing them to enjoy the spotlight.

“He just sat back and let them have their moment,” notes Hudson.

Davies also went the extra length to show his gratitude to the students by personally congratulating each and every one of them backstage following the performance.

Look for the entire performance of ‘Child’s Play’ — which portrays three couples from different social classes who deal with events ranging from the death of Princess Diana to the global financial crisis — to surface online in the coming weeks.
