Everything old is new again, & Tall Todd & his custom harvester guys are no exception. Todd & his crew are down in Vernon, Texas. The move down there last week was long & full of detours, with 1 taking them east from Sheridan, Wyoming, towards the Black Hills where over a foot of snow was dumped. East of Gillette, Wyoming, the snow plows were on the road & when they got to Lusk, Wyoming, there was ice on the roads. The service truck lost a couple of injectors & had to be towed to Cheyenne with a danged tow charge coming in at $1200. If this is how their custom harvesting season is beginning, it can only be uphill from here! In Nebraska, the crops looked good as they did in the Billings area on the way down. In Kansas, there had been recent rains & the farmers wondered if it was too little too late. Oklahoma has had recent rains & there was some hail evidence along the route. The Red River that divides Texas & Oklahoma, was funning full, & in the Harrold & Vernon, Texas, area, either a flat-line wind or a tornado took down the major elevator leg & some grain bins & older buildings, leaving the farmers wondering where to haul the u-coming harvested grain. The closest operating elevators are in Frederick, Oklahoma, or Alta to the west of Frederick, but the haul would be close to 50 miles 1 way! In the past 3 weeks, there has been over 14 inches of rain. The crops are still green & there's some evidence of hail, with up to possibly 40% damage. The once-dry "dugouts" or ponds are full & the fields of grain are starting to go down from all the moisture. The weather has been on the cool side with high temps in the low 70's. I'll continue to keep you updated on Todd & the custom fellows & again this season, keep track of the crops & harvest as they slowly wind their way up to our Golden Triangle this coming harvest season.
