Athlete of the Week
LOCAL SPORTS – “ATHLETE OF THE WEEK”
(UNDATED) – KSEN/K96—Bozeman Trophy Female Athletes of the Week became the best of the best last weekend, and our Male Co-Athletes were also the best and the other ever so close.
Just like last week, there was really no way to make a decision on one over the other and so we are naming Co-female Athletes of the Week. Speaking about the best of the best, Conrad Jr. Breauna Erickson not only won the Pole Vault competition at the State meet for the third year in a row, but she also set the new Class B girls record with her best jump ever at 11’9”.
The third one wasn’t easy as she battled Huntley Project’s Brynn Wandle right down to the last attempt. Wandle missed all three attempts at 11’9” and Erickson missed twice before making the third try to set the new record.
A slick track and several delays didn’t hold Erickson back from re-writing the record books. Erickson also ran a leg on the Conrad 400 relay team which finished 4th and she was a state qualifier in the Long Jump and the Triple Jump.
Even with that elite performance, Breauna shares the spotlight this week with Conrad/ Choteau softball pitcher Maggie Bender. There was a lot of contribution to this team that surprised many when they won the State B softball championship, but it was Bender that delivered every inning on the mound. Head Coach Tyson Anderson says she was solid throughout.
Bender pitched out of a jam with the bases loaded in the final inning, forcing a ground ball that was flipped to second for a force out. Just one inning before that she had hit her school record 12th Home Run, a blast that landed some 30-ft beyond the fence. Maggie will continue her softball career next year at Lake Region State in N. Dakota.
Our first Co-Male Athlete of the Week has been so close to this honor numerous times this season in Basketball and Track & Field, but now is the time. Shelby Jr. Randon Richman just kept getting better in the 400m dash and at the state meet came up 2nd best with his best time at 51.25. Randon also was also a State qualifier in the 100m and 200 m and on the Shelby 1600-releay team.
Athlete of the Week honors also go to Conrad Sr. Zack Durnell who recorded his best Pole Vault ever at 14-feet. That gave Conrad a sweep in the Pole Vault and Durnell also ran a leg on the Conrad 400 relay team that finished 5th.
What a week and Congratulations to our KSEN/K96—Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week, Jr. Breauna Erickson and Sr. Maggie Bender of Conrad, Sr. Zack Durnell of Conrad and Jr. Randon Richman of Shelby. The Athlete of the Week is sponsored locally by McDonald’s in Cut Bank. McDonald’s honors our Athlete’s with two free value meals each.
