Athlete of the Week
Overall outcome for local teams was not as good as expected last weekend but there still were some outstanding individual performances from our KSEN/K96-Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week.
Our Female Athlete of the Week was part of the one team that did advance out of the Divisionals and on to the State A Tournament. Browning Sr. Jerel Whitegrass, according to Head Coach "Poor Boy" Croff "was just a workhorse all weekend long." Whitegrass is 5'll" but she was continually called on to guard 6'2" and 6-3", especially in the Semi-final game against Frenchtown. But again, she works really hard, as does the whole team, and gets a lot done in every phase of the game. In the 4 games of the Tournament, Whitegrass led the team in scoring, averaging 11-points a game, including 14 in the Frenchtown game and 16 in the Saturday morning game against Columbia Falls. She also averaged nearly 7 rebounds per game, 2 assists and 2 steals. Croff says Whitegrass is "quick and athletic," and the work ethic is amazing. The Browning girls will rest this week and then head for the State A Tournament in Bozeman March 7-9th.
Our Male Athlete of the Week was also a solid performer at the Northern C Divisional where the CJI Hawks fell just short of a chance to advance to the State Tournament. Sophomore Guard-Forward, Ryland St. John had an especially strong effort in the Saturday morning loss to Roy-Winifred. In that game, St. John did everything possible, scoring 30 -points with 8 rebounds. He shot 57% from the field overall and went 5-8 from 3pt. range. Ryland also played well in the Semifinal loss to Belt Friday night with 16-points and 5 rebounds.
Congratulations to our KSEN/K96-Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week, Sr. Jerel Whitegrass of Browning and So. Ryland St. John of CJI. The Athlete of the Week is sponsored locally by McDonald's in Cut Bank. McDonald's honors our Athlete's with two free value meals each.
