Athlete of the Week
Our KSEN/K96 – Bozeman trophy athletes of the week are playing at peak levels right now and in both cases may have turned in the best games of the career.
In fact, Fairfield head coach Jordan Ratliff says he definitely believes that sr. Gavin Mills had the best game of his career, when the eagles took on lodge grass last Saturday in Billings. The game turned out to be everything it promised to be and more from the two class B co-champions from a year ago. Mills, on a team that has such a balanced scoring attack hardly anyone is over 20-points, scored 23. The game went to triple overtime and the Eagles had to keep scoring and they did with Mills a key factor not only in scoring, but he also had five assists, giving great opportunities to his teammates. Lodge Grass did end up winning the thriller by one point. Gavin is a solid starter for a team who seldom loses and was also a key starter for the Eagle football team that worked its way to the semi-finals of the class B playoffs.
Our female athlete of the week is the third player to be named “athlete of the week,” from the Choteau bulldogs. And it was a difficult choice considering we had 4 solid nominations this week. After considering the numbers, the effort and the competition, our selection is Choteau junior Emma Gunderson. Of course, the biggest game of the week was the Bulldogs one-point loss to the 1B’s top ranked team, Fairfield. In that contest Emma scored eight points but she was all over the boards with nine rebounds and add to that three assists and five steals. In games against Rocky Boy she contributed 18 points and then 23 against Cut Bank and nearly penned a triple-double. She is a hustler with a sense for the ball who plays great defense and seems to come up with big plays just when you might not be expecting it.
Our other nominees included, Maddison Underdal of Shelby, 33-points against Cut Bank, Brae Eneboe of Conrad who had games of 18 & 17 points that included 14-16 from the free throw line, and Erica Ramsey, a Valier senior, averaging over 11 points a game and has played a key role in Valier’s overall 13-3 record.
