Our 1st Athletes of the Week in the spring come off the golf course where both our male and female Athlete’s shot red-hot rounds in the opening Tournament at Marias Valley.

Fairfield Jr. Emma Woods gets the nod for the ladies after firing an 83 and winning medalist honors in the girls tournament.

Woods has consistently developed as one of the best in the area since breaking on the scene as a Freshman. Fairfield Head Coach John Bakkum says one of the keys to her game is length. In his words, “she hits the ball incredibly far for her size.” And as all golfers know hitting the ball a long ways sometimes brings trouble, but the Coach says Woods “also does a good job managing her bad shots and recovering from them. In the Tournament at Marias Valley, Bakkum says she was especially good at “overcoming bad holes and not letting it affect her mentally.”

Emma was also a key player-starter on the Fairfield Lady Eagles Basketball team in their run to the State Tournament.

Our Male Athlete was also strong from the start and knowing his history, we may see a lot more of this. Sr. Jarek Shepherd of Conrad won boys medalist honors with a 74, just two over par at Marias Valley and not an easy task to accomplish. But, Jarek works extremely had at his game we expect it’s just going to get better.

In the round last Friday, it was all a matter of consistency. Head Coach Phil Springer says as far as he knew, there were no birdies in the round just hitting all the greens in regulation and two-putting for the par. He did have one, three-putt and 1 missed green.

Jarek has turned into one of the best H.S. golfers in the State. He finished in a tie for 10th as a Freshman, 7th as a sophomore and then of course golf was cancelled out all together last year. Conrad finished 2nd in the team standings behind Missoula Loyola, just as they did in that 2019 State Tournament. Coach Springer his #2 Brady Bokma may be back soon after an injury in Basketball.

Congratulations to our KSEN/K96—Bozeman Trophy Athlete’s of the Week, Jr. Emma Woods of Fairfield and Sr. Jarek Shepherd of Conrad. The Athlete of the Week is sponsored locally by McDonald’s in Cut Bank. McDonald’s honors our Athlete’s with two free value meals each.
