LOCAL SPORTS – ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

(SHELBY) – A pair of Shelby athlete’s had impressive performances over the weekend in basketball and wrestling and they’re our KSEN/K96—Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week.

Male Athlete of the Week honors go to Coyote Jr. Kyle McDermott who threw up big numbers in both of Shelby’s games in the Coyote Classic.  Shelby opened up with a win over Eureka as McDermott led the way with 26 points on 5-3-point shots.  He added 5-rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.

The numbers in Shelby’s second game, a win over Chinook, were similar. 23-points, 3-rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.  McDermott is a returning all-conference player and is expected to be among the top scorers for the Coyotes this season.   As you can tell by the numbers, he also plays some pretty good defense.

We also had a very qualified nomination this week for Cut Bank Jr. Wrestler Kanon Branch who defeated two State Finalists from a year ago and won the Invitational Tournament in Glasgow.

Our female Athlete of the Week is just an 8th grader but is already competing with the best at the varsity level, thank you very much.   Ellie Munson was a leader on the Shelby Cross-country team and now she has won her 1st championship in varisty wrestling.  Munson went 4-0 winning the All-Girls Tournament in Kalispell.  She defeated wrestler from Ronan, Missoula Sentinel, Flathead and Belgrade all by fall at 114 pounds.

Shelby Coach Thad White said, “we’re quite proud of Ellie,” she’s worked hard in the off-season attending camps and open mats and her hard work is paying off early.

Congratulations to our KSEN/K96—Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week, Jr. Kyle McDermott of Shelby and 8th grade Varsity Wrestler Ellie Munson of Shelby.  The Athlete of the Week is sponsored locally by McDonald’s in Cut Bank.  McDonald’s honors our athlete’s with two free value meals each.

KSEN encourages all Coaches, Fans and Parents to nominate Athletes of the Week if you believe they have had an outstanding performance.  E-mail: markdaniels@townsquaremedia.com
