Athlete of the Year
It's rare but both our male and female KSEN/K96--Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week come from Chester and the CJI Hawks this week.
Hawks Head Volleyball Coach Jordan Miller has high praise for our Female Athlete, So. Setter, Brie Mattson. Similar to our female athlete, a week ago, Mattson is not one that gets the big kill and block numbers, but in Miller's words, "she is the reason we are getting the kills." Miller also said she is very good at reading hitters to know where the ball is coming and "she flies into the bleachers for all the wild balls that others might not even go after." Mattson is the Hawks leader in Digs with nearly 50 in three matches last week. She also had 9 serving aces in those 3 matches. CJI is currently in 2nd place in the 7C District with a 7-3 Conference record, behind only Big Sandy at 8-1.
You'll recognize our Male Athlete of the Week, CJI Sr. Nate Nelson. The Running back and middle linebacker is arguably one of the best 6-man Running Backs in the State. Nelson was once again difference maker in CJI's runaway win over North Star last Sat. He ended the day with 134-yards on 6 carries and 2 TD's. Also 6 solo tackles on defense. All of that came in limited playing time due to the score. Hawks Head Coach Jim Vinson says, "Nate really is a gifted athlete who runs inside so well, is hard to tackle and then in the open field, nobody can catch him." He is also called his star player a vocal leader, leader of the younger kids, and he's almost like having an additional coach on the field and at practice. We also had an excellent nomination for Hawks Jr. Cooper Streit who leads the blocking for Nelson and had 5 carries and 3 receptions for 119 yards and 2 TD's.
Congratulations to our KSEN/K96--Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week, So. Brie Mattson of CJI and Sr. Nate Nelson of CJI. The Athlete of the Week is sponsored locally by McDonald's in Cut Bank. McDonald's honors our Athlete's with two free value meals each.
