How Safe Are Motorcycle Riders Here In Montana?

I'll be honest, I'm a bit jealous of motorcycle riders. I would love to feel the freedom you get when riding on two wheels.

Growing up, however, I was scared of riding on a motorcycle due to the fact my parents basically said I'd crash and die if I so much as sat on one.

Motorcycle Riders Are Not All Gang Members

Popular culture in America has done a lot to give people a preconceived notion of what a motorcycle rider is and looks like.

They aren't all Hell's Angels roaming the countryside looking to rape and pillage whatever or whoever they come across.

No, most riders are your everyday Montana residents who want to enjoy the freedom they experience whenever they hit the open road on their "hog."

Motorcycle Accidents Are Up In Recent Years

Sadly, death has been on an upward swing for riders in recent years, as fatal accidents jumped by almost 33% over a 10-year period.

Motorcycle riders only account for 3% of all registered vehicles on the road, but they also account for 15% of all fatal traffic accidents.

Motorcycles just by their nature are more dangerous than regular passenger vehicles, which means we all can do a better job of being aware of who is around us.

As far as the safety of riders here in Montana, well, you'll see from the gallery below where we rank when compared to other states.

America's Worst States for Motorcycle Safety

Easton & Easton Law Offices ranked the most dangerous states for motorcyclists in 2025 using crash data from NHTSA and IIHS. Factors included fatal crash rates, deaths per 10,000 bikes, and impaired driving. Each factor was weighted, normalized, and totaled for a final score, with higher scores meaning greater danger for riders.
