Governor Gianforte Announces ‘Charlie Kirk Day’ in Montana

Political commentator and podcaster Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during a rally last year at the University of Utah. The news rocked headlines around the world and generated a wide variety of reactions.

Some people cried while some people cheered. Even a year later, the internet continues to get flooded with vastly different reactions to Kirk's death with posts that include celebrations of Charlie's life; memes of his widow, Erika; and the popular and commonly used trend of commenting "Who?" from critics when outlets post about him.

Human to Human: Let's Be Better

There quite a few people and things I've disagreed with in my life, but I've never wished death on someone or celebrated someone losing their life.

I've never celebrated, nor can I stomach, the idea of a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old losing their father, especially by execution but I digress.

No matter how you feel about the situation, one thing is clear: a man was shot and killed in a public, leaving behind a family, friends, and loved ones. This man just so happened to leave an impact on people all across the world: both positive and negative.

People have a right to their opinions; you can do what you want with that opinion. And if you can go to bed at night feeling great about your stance, hey, that's between you and whatever you believe in.

And don't worry about what I believe in or what political stance you might think I have - you'll never guess or get it. Someone getting killed in the manner that Kirk did, leaving behind small children and a wife isn't political to me - it's about being a human being.

Montana Remembers Charlie Kirk

As for the state of Montana, Governor Greg Gianforte has no problem showing his support for the legacy of Charlie Kirk with an announcement on Thursday (9/10).

"Charlie Kirk's assassination was a sobering reminder of the growing threat of hatred in our society," Governor Gianforte wrote. "As we mourn his loss, September 10 will serve as Charlie Kirk Day in Montana to honor his life and reaffirm our commitment to respectful, civil discourse."

And despite what critics of Kirk will assume they know about the mindset of others, what Governor Gianforte said is exactly what Kirk represented: Being able to have a respectful agreement.

Heck, you could agree with me right now and it won't bother me - it shouldn't. We should be able to have dialogue and conversation about topics without wishing harm or ill will on one another.

You can say what you want; you can do what you want; hell, you can even post what you want. It's what makes this country great and what Charlie Kirk has hammered home so many times.

And if you can sleep at night feeling great about the words you put out there, hey, good for you.
