Hardly a day goes by without hearing about people moving to Montana and supposedly overrunning the state!

After all, Montana has been one of the best-kept secrets in the nation and home to more cows than people for quite some time now.

Over the last few years, recent television shows and movies have been blamed for the influx of residents.

I won't get into that right now; that's a topic for a whole new article. haha

But when you look at the numbers, Montana is far from the most popular place to move, which contradicts what most people seem to think.

How Many People Are Moving To Montana?

Interestingly enough, the moving company U-Haul recently put together a study examining where folks are moving throughout the country.

The U-Haul Annual Growth Index report is based on one-way U-Haul rentals to both cities and states.

The information that the study revealed may shock you a little bit when you look at the details.

Compared to the rest of the nation, Montana is not that popular of a place to move to.

We fell right smack dab in the middle, and I ranked number 24.

  • Growth State Rank: 24
  • Arrival Percentage: 50%
  • Departure Percentage: 50%
  • Notable Growth Markets: #20 Missoula

Interestingly enough, South Carolina was determined to be the most popular state to move to in 2024.

Dallas, Texas, was the most popular metro area, and Ocala, Florida, was the most popular city.

Will there be any changes as we had in 2025?

I suppose only time will tell.
