MLB Weekly Report: Los Angeles Dodgers Open Season 3-0 [VIDEO]
The L.A. Dodgers were the first major league team to get to 3-0 in 2012, while several superstars began their seasons with a hot streak. Here’s this week’s MLB report:
Dodgers Look To Sweep Padres
After beating the Padres 6-5 on Dee Gordon’s single in the 11th inning on Saturday, the L.A. Dodgers (3-0) are off to their best start since 1999. Outfielders Matt Kemp and Andre Ethier are once again leading the team’s offense. Kemp and Ethier had an NL-leading six RBIs apiece through Saturday night. A win on Sunday will give the Dodgers their first 4-0 start since 1981.
Tigers’ Dynamic Duo Dooms Red Sox
The Detroit Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 start on the 2012 season, thanks in part to big hitters Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder. Each slugger homered twice on Saturday, including back-to-back shots in the fifth inning off Boston Red Sox ace Josh Beckett. Detroit goes for the sweep of Boston on Sunday.
Play of the Week: Dee Gordon, Los Angeles Dodgers
L.A. Dodgers’ shortstop Dee Gordon has incredible speed on the base paths. That quickness comes in handy in the field, too, as you can see in the clip below from Thursday’s Dodgers-Padres game.
This Week’s Series To Watch: Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit Tigers
It’s early in the season, but both Tampa Bay and Detroit are expected to contend for American League playoff spots. Their three-game series starts Tuesday and features three afternoon games, a rarity for a mid-week series. Heralded Rays’ hurler Matt Moore makes his 2012 debut on Tuesday against Rick Porcello of the Tigers. It will be interesting to see how Moore handles Tigers’ sluggers like Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder.
Fantasy Pick-Up of the Week: Kendrys Morales, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim
Finally returning to the big leagues after a broken leg sidelined him in 2010, Kendrys Morales went 5-for-7 over his first two games, including a 4-for-4 on Saturday against the Royals. As a switch-hitter with power, Morales will get his at-bats at DH in Los Angeles. It’s time to get on his bandwagon.
Fantasy Drop of the Week: Chase Headley, San Diego Padres
After his 0-for-11 start to the season, Chase Headley needs to be dropped from your roster. Fantasy owners should be able to find another third baseman with more production upside than Headley for the time being. Monitor his progress, however, as he could provide cheap steals from this position later in the year.
