Neil Young, Foo Fighters + More Honor Paul McCartney at MusiCares’ 2012 Person of the Year Award Ceremony
And the honors just keep coming for Paul McCartney. On Friday (Feb. 10), McCartney was the man of the hour at the annual 2012 MusiCares gala dinner, where the former Beatle was named the Person of the Year at the star-studded ceremony.
Finding superstars to honor McCartney at the event was not hard to do. A wide array of talent came out to support the musical icon, including Neil Young and Crazy Horse, James Taylor, Katy Perry, Norah Jones, Alicia Keys, Diana Krall, Coldplay and Foo Fighters.
To get things started, McCartney and his touring band took the stage to rock the Wings-era tune ‘Junior’s Farm,’ a revamped version of the Beatles classic ‘Magical Mystery Tour’ and a handful of other cuts. The other artists on the lineup covered hits from throughout McCartney’s career in the Fab Four up through his most recent solo projects. Songs performed during the show included ‘Hey Jude’ (by Perry), ‘I Saw Her Standing There’ (by Young and Crazy Horse), ‘We Can Work it Out’ (by Coldplay) and ‘Blackbird’ (by Keys, on the piano).
“For me, obviously it’s great to hear these fantastic artists singing my songs,” McCartney said while accepting his honor, before thanking everyone who came out to support his special night.
In addition to the music and special appearances, the gala for MusiCares also raised a record-breaking $6.5 million through silent auctions and a quick live auction. Items sold included a red-and-cobalt-blue piano, painted by visual artist Peter Max for Ringo Starr, which fetched $175,000. Monies raised for MusiCares will aid musicians in need of medical care and other support.
This past week also consisted of McCartney receiving a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame and the release of his latest musical venture, ‘Kisses on the Bottom.’ The album features several special songs to the singer, including many of his childhood favorites such as ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’ and ‘It’s Only a Paper Moon.’ The album also has two brand new tracks — ‘Only Our Hearts’ and ‘My Valentine’ — which are rumored to be about his new bride, Nancy Shevell, who stood proudly by her husband’s side as he was honored by MusiCares.
Look for McCartney to perform at Sunday night’s Grammys (Feb. 12) when it airs live on CBS at 8:00PM ET.
