UM Students to Hold Quality of Life Event for Public
MISSOULA – Students in Communication and Hearing Working in Action at the University of Montana will host the fourth annual Advocacy Day event with a “Quality of Life” theme. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Feb. 26, in University Center Room 332 and is free and open to the public.
Advocacy Day aims to spread awareness about issues related to language and communication and targets students or professionals in health and human science fields such as speech-language pathology, audiology, psychology, social work, education, counseling and physical therapy. The event also benefits students or community members wanting learn more about the human brain, speech, language, hearing and how they can advocate for individuals with disabilities.
The event includes five presentations by guest speakers and students:
· 9-10:30 a.m.: “Caregiver Involvement: Supporting Your Most Valuable Resource,” presented by Kirsten Murray, associate professor and chair of UM’s Department of Counselor Education.
· 10:40-11:40 a.m.: “Building Context of Historical Trauma for Practice,” presented by Maegan Rides At The Door, director of the National Native Children’s Trauma Center.
· 11:40 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: “What to Do When Experiencing or Witnessing a Stroke,” student-led F.A.S.T. (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) workshop.
· 1:30-2:30 p.m.: “Supporting the Optimal Development of Deaf and Hard of Hearing Infants and Toddlers,” presented by Lynne Koester, retired UM developmental psychology professor.
· 2:40-4:00 p.m.: “MonTECH: Providing Montanans with Assistive Technology to Increase Independence and Enhance Personal Performance,” presented by Julie Doerner, clinical coordinator for UM’s Montana Assistive Technology Program.
