Voters Would Be More Opposed to an Atheist Candidate Than a Mormon One — Survey of the Day
If Mitt Romney is able to capture the Republican nomination for president there will be much talk about his Mormon faith and whether voters will be willing to pull the lever for someone who belongs to a religion that only about two percent of Americans practice.
A new survey from Poll Position of 1,333 registered voters suggests Romney’s religion may prove to be a hindrance on his way to the White House, but it is not nearly the problem it would be if he had no faith at all. According to the poll, 39 percent would vote for a Mormon, whereas 36 percent would not, and 25 percent either had no opinion or didn’t want to answer the question.
However, when asked if they would a vote for an atheist, only 27 percent said that they would, whereas 58 percent said they would not, and 15 percent didn’t want to give a yes-or-no answer to the question.
