Weekend Box Office: ‘New Year’s Eve’ Toasts a First Place Finish
It took a movie with a zillion stars to do it, but ‘The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn’ has finally been knocked off its perch at the top of the charts. Despite blistering reviews, ‘New Year’s Eve’ brought in $13.7 million in its debut, making it the most popular movie at the box office this weekend.
Jonah Hill’s comedy ‘The Sitter’ had a $10 million haul, followed by — yes — the ‘Twilight’ film, which continued to print money by selling $7.9 million in tickets.
‘The Muppets’ came in fourth with $7 million, while ‘Arthur Christmas’ rounded out the top five with $6.6 million in revenues.
Here’s a list of the top 10 movies at the box office Friday through Sunday with estimated grosses, along with how much each movie has made since its release:
1. ‘New Year’s Eve’ – $13.7 million, new release

6. ‘Hugo’ – $6.1 million, $33.4 million total
7. ‘The Descendants’ – $4.3 million, $23.6 million total
8. ‘Happy Feet 2′ – $3.7 million, $56.8 million total
9. ‘Jack and Jill’ – $3.2 million, $68.6 million total
10. ‘Immortals’ – $2.4 million, $79.8 million total
