Athlete of the Week
KSEN/K96 – BOZEMAN TROPHY ATHLETE OF THE WEEK AWARDS THIS WEEK INCLUDE AN HONOR THAT HAS NEVER BEFORE BEEN GIVEN AND ONE THAT HAS.
OUR MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK, FOR THE 2ND TIME THIS SEASON IS FAIRFIELD JR. MIGUEL PEREZ. AS DIFFICULT AS IT WAS FOR THE EAGLES TO MOVE THE BALL DOWN THE FIELD ON OFFENSE IN SATURDAY’S SEMI-FINAL GAME AGAINST FLORENCE-CARLTON, PEREZ DID CARRY IT 22 TIMES FOR 130 YARDS AND OF COURSE HE SCORED THE ONLY TD OF THE GAME AND THE GAME WINNING TOUCHDOWN.
IN CASE YOU HADN’T HEARD THE GAME WAS TIED 0-0 AT THE END OF REGULATION, BUT AS THE GAME WENT ON THE EAGLES AND PEREZ WERE FINDING MORE SUCCESS RUNNING THE BALL. AND SO, IN OVERTIME WITH THE BALL SPOTTED ON THE 4 YARD LINE, EAGLES HEAD COACH GREG MISNER DECIDED TO GO WITH PEREZ ON 3 STRAIGHT CARRIES. ON THE 3RD CARRY HE POUNDED IT IN FROM INSIDE THE 5-YARD LINE AND THE EAGLES ALSO SCORED THEIR EXTRA POINT.
ONCE FLORENCE-CARLTON GOT THEIR CHANCE ON THE 10 THEY SCORED ON THEIR FIRST PLAY AND HAD TO GO FOR 2 ON THE EXTRA POINT TRY. PEREZ BECAME THE HERO AGAIN AS HE PICKED OFF THE PAT DUCHEIN PASS AND BROUGHT THE GAME TO AN END.
IN ADDITION TO THE OFFENSE, THE JR. RUNNING BACK AND LINEBACKER ACTUALLY HAD 2 PICKS ON THE DAY AND A FUMBLE RECOVERY ALONG WITH ABOUT 6 TACKLES. FAIRFIELD IS HEADED TO THE STATE B TITLE GAME FOR THE 2ND TIME IN 3 YEARS.
THROUGHOUT THE 24 YEAR HISTORY OF THE KSEN-BOZEMAN TROPHY ATHLETE OF THE WEEK PROGRAM MANY HAVE SUGGESTED THAT WE GIVE A TEAM AWARD AT DIFFERENT TIMES. BUT, WE HAVE NEVER DONE IT JUST BECAUSE IT WASN’T A TEAM AWARD. THIS WEEK, HOWEVER I THOUGHT IT’S TIME TO GIVE IN, MAINLY BECAUSE OF THE TRULY OUTSTANDING TEAM PLAY OF THE CHOTEAU BULLDOGS VOLLEYBALL TEAM.
CHOTEAU HEAD COACH ANN FUNK HAS ALWAYS STRESSED TEAM PLAY WITH THE GENERAL IDEA THAT IF YOU DON’T GET ALL ASPECTS OF THE GAME TAKEN CARE OF YOU DON’T GET ANYTHING TAKEN CARE OF. THAT WAS TRULY EVIDENT IN THE BULLDOGS 5-GAME SLUGFEST WITH HUNTLEY PROJECT IN THE SEMI-FINAL OF THE STATE B.
THIS WAS JUST ONE EXAMPLE OF THE TEAM EFFORT. UNOFFICIALLY CHOTEAU HAD 59 KILLS IN THE GRUELING 5-GAME MATCH AND INDIVIDUALLY, ELLIE LEE LED WITH 20 KILLS. EMMA GUNDERSON KNOCKED DOWN 14 AND ADA BIELER HAD 13. TYPICALLY NO MORE THAN ONE INDIVIDUAL WOULD SEE DOUBLE DIGIT KILLS IN A MATCH.
COACH FUNK SAID SHE ALSO USED MORE SUBS IN THE MATCH WITH 11 ALL TOGETHER GETTING PLAYING TIME WHEN IT’S USUALLY 9 AND SHE AGREED A GREAT TEAM EFFORT.
Q: “A TEAM EFFORT”……….NEWS AUDIO……………ANN FUNK –
AND CHOTEAU GETS THE 3RD PLACE TROPHY AND EVEN THOUGH THEY’VE BEEN TO THE STATE TOURNAMENT MOST EVERY YEAR, THAT WAS THEIR 1ST TROPHY SINCE 2011.
