Athlete of the Week
IT’S BEEN OVER A MONTH AND A HALF NOW SINCE WE HAD THE OPPORTUNTY TO WATCH AND TALK ABOUT H.S. SPORTS BUT THAT TIME HAS FINALLY RETURNED WITH THE START OF THE H.S. BASKETBALL AND WRESTLING SEASON.
THAT ALSO MEANS WE CAN RETURN TO NAMING AN “ATHLETE OF THE WEEK,” WHICH WE HAVE DONE.
FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HONORS GO TO AN AUGUSTA PLAYER WHO HAS BEEN OUTSTANDING THROUGHOUT HER H.S. CAREER IN VOLLEYBALL AND BASKETBALL….TALENTED ENOUGH THAT SHE MAY BE ABLE TO CONTINUE A SPORTS CAREER AT THE COLLEGE LEVEL.
6-FOOT SR. OLIVIA ISAKSON CAME OUT STRONG ON THE OPENING NIGHT OF THE SEASON WITH ONE OF ONLY A FEW 20-POINT GAMES FOR THE GIRLS ACROSS THE STATE.
THE LADY ELKS FOUND THEMSELVES DOWN EARLY IN THE CONTEST WITH SUNBURST BUT WERE ABLE TO “STEP IT UP WHEN THEY NEEDED TO ACCORDING TO 2ND YEAR HEAD COACH KEZIA ALLEN. SHE SAYS HER STAR SR. STEPPED IT UP AND “PLAYED A LEADERSHIP ROLE,” TO BRING THE ELKS BACK TO A 66-57 WIN OVER SUNBURST.
COACH ALLEN SAYS ISAKSON IS ADEPT IN ALL PHASES OF THE GAME INCLUDING INSIDE AT THE BASKET, OUTSIDE SHOOTING AND HANDLING THE BALL AND IS GETTING BETTER ALL THE TIME DRIVING TO THE BASKET.
OUR MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK HAS BEEN KEY TO SHELBY GETTING OFF TO A 2-0 START AGAINST QUALITY TEAMS IN BROWNING AND FAIRFIELD.
6-4 SR. LOGAN LECK WHO HAS BEEN UP TO THIS POINT IN HIS CAREER, SHELBY’S MAIN BALL HANDLER, HAS NOW BEEN ABLE TO COME TO THE OFF-GUARD POSITION AND MAYBE GET FREE FOR MORE OPEN SHOTS, BUT HE IS ALSO VERY CAPABLE OF DRIVING OR EVEN PLAYING THE POST IF THAT’S WHERE THE COYOTES NEED HIM.
HE OPEND UP THE YEAR WITH 24 TO LEAD SHELBY AGAINST BROWNING AND WAS 2ND LEADING SCORER WITH 17 AGAINST FAIRFIELD. SHELBY HEAD COACH TOM REYNOLDS SAYS LECK IS ALSO, PLAYING “A PRETTY HIGH LEVEL OF DEFENSE RIGHT NOW.” HE HAD 12 REBOUNDS IN THE FAIRFIELD GAME AND 7 AGAINST BROWNING. HE ALSO TOSSED IN A FEW STEALS AND 4 BLOCKED SHOTS AGAINST THE EAGLES.
