It's that time of the season when the cream of the crop rise to the top! So it was with our KSEN/K96--Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week.
Our Male Athlete of the Week has been here before.  The CJI Hawks had to survive a challenge game to ensure their spot at the State C Basketball Tournament. That would have been even tougher without the play of Sr. Ryland St. John. St. John may have played his best game when everything was on the line in that Challenge game.  In the end he scored 23 points, shot 9-14 from the field and pulled down 7 rebounds.  It gave the Hawks their 1st State Tournament appearance since 1999. Throughout the Tournament, St. John 15 points per game, shot 51-percent from the field and had nearly 8-rebounds per game.  He also added 3 assists per game. CJI Coach Brad Kammerzell told us, even when the defense collapses on him, he is able to find an open teammate.
Our Female Athlete of the Week also comes from the Hawks on the ladies' side, where CJI defeated the always talented and perennial winner, the Belt Huskies.  Head Coach Jordan Miller told us that the defense played by Jr. Brie Mattson, "was unmatched and really put us over the top."  Defense doesn't always produce the biggest numbers, but we're told that Mattson had right around 30 steals in the 3 games of the Divisional Tournament and she's an Athlete with a motor that never stops running. Also nominated this week, CJI star Brynn Kammerzell who scored 20-points with 20-rebounds and hit 12/12 from the free throw line.  Brynn was 25-27 from the free throw line in the Tournament and averaged 23-poins and 15 rebounds per game.
Congratulations to our KSEN/K96--Bozeman Trophy Athletes of the Week, CJI Sr. Ryland St. John and CJI Jr. Brie Mattson.  The Athlete of the Week is sponsored locally by McDonald's in Cut Bank. McDonald's honors our Athlete of the Week with two free value meals each. Fans, parents, and coaches are encouraged to nominate an Athlete of the Week.
