Elton John, Chris Cornell Nominated for Golden Globes
Elton John and Chris Cornell both were announced as nominees for the 69th annual Golden Globe Awards in January. In fact, both were nominated for awards in the same category: Best Original Song in a Motion Picture.
The one-time Soundgarden and Audioslave frontman wrote ‘The Keeper,’ a song from the film ‘Machine Gun Preacher’ starring Gerard Butler. Butler plays a a former drug-dealing criminal who finds faith leading him on a path to help the children of East Africa. It’s based on the true story of Sam Childers.
“I sort of put myself in (those) shoes” Cornell said in a statement. “If he were Woody Guthrie, what sort of song would he write for these children? For me it’s personal because of the content of the song and its message. There are children living in this world that might not make it through the night.”
Elton John’s song was much less serious. ‘Hello Hello’ was nominated from the ‘Gnomeo and Juliet’ movie. Lady Gaga sings with John on the movie’s signature track, which had to be restructured multiple times to reflect changes in the script. “With Gaga on it, that gives it a real kind of modern sound,” he said.
John added that he’s looking forward to attending the ceremony, which takes place on Jan. 15, 2012. Other nominees in the category include ‘Lay Your Head Down’ from ‘Albert Nobbs,’ ‘The Living Proof’ from ‘The Help,’ and Madonna‘s ‘Masterpiece’ from ‘W.E.’
