If you are in the same boat and do not have a will, you might be wondering what actually happens if you pass away unexpectedly.

Montana Intestacy Laws Decide Who Gets What
If you live in Montana and die without a will in place, your assets are handled under what are called intestacy laws.
If that term sounds confusing, you are not alone. Most people have no idea what intestacy laws are or how they work.
In simple terms, it means the state decides where your money and property go, and it is usually based on blood relationships. There is a set order for who gets what, and it does not matter if you told your spouse, kids, or anyone else what you wanted to happen. If it is not written down in a will, it does not count.
A Tool That Shows Where Your Assets Would Go
Montana State University actually has an interactive tool on their website that shows exactly where your assets would go if you died without a will.
It can be eye-opening, especially if your wishes do not line up with what the law says.
As you scroll through the gallery below, just take this as a friendly reminder that there is no better time than now to get a will set up. I am saying that to myself too.
