Record Elk on Display at Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Headquarters
MISSOULA, Mont.—The largest nontypical bull elk ever taken in the state of Montana is now on display at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.
Montana resident Garth Sessions shot the bull on public land in the southeastern part of the state in 2016. With a score of 431 7/8 inches, it also ranks 20th all-time in the state’s record books.
“We appreciate Garth for allowing us to display his mount so everyone can come and see it,” said Kyle Weaver, RMEF president and CEO. “This bull is a prime example of both quality wildlife habitat and the implementation of well-thought-out management practices. It is also demonstrates how Hunting is Conservation since hunters provide funding for conservation work via the purchase of tags and licenses plus an excise tax on guns, ammunition and archery equipment.”
The inside spread of the bull’s antlers covers nearly four feet while the outside measurement is 56 inches.
Sessions referred to himself as a “regular Joe” who happened to be in the right place at the right time.
The world record archery bull elk, taken by Steve Felix during the same hunting season in the same general geographical part of Montana, remains on display.
RMEF’s Elk Country Visitor Center is located at 5705 Grant Creek Road in Missoula, Montana. It is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
