Iconic TV star Andy Griffith has died.

Griffith, known for his work on such classic shows as ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ and ‘Matlock,’ was 86.

Griffith passed away Tuesday morning at his home in Dare County, North Carolina around 7 a.m. It had been reported earlier in the morning that an ambulance had been dispatched to his house, although it’s unclear why.

Griffith starred as small-town sheriff Andy Taylor on ‘The Andy Griffith Show’ from 1960-1968, a comedy that launched the career of Ron Howard, who played his son. Griffith then reprised the role in the series ‘Mayberry R.F.D.’ He also enjoyed a nine-year run as lawyer Ben Matlock on the series ‘Matlock,’ which graced the small screen from 1986-1995.
